Catharometer: gas leak detection unit that measures % volume of gas. Uses thermal conductivity as a detection technology.

Calibration: is the procedure used to adjust the instrument for a proper response, usually in reference to a unit's zero point.

Calibration Gas: in gas leak detection this term can be used to identify the fuel gas to which a unit is set to detect methane, pentane, butane, etc. A calibration gas usually has a certified concentration.

Closure: A door that allows quick and easy access to the inside of a pressure vessel, i.e., pig launcher, receiver, strainer. Pigs are inserted into and removed from a launcher/receiver through the closure door. Closures may be either threaded or clamp-ring type.

Colormetric Detectors: are leak detectors, usually fast and inexpensive, that react chemically with small leaks and cause a visible color change.

Combustion: is the rapid oxidation of a material evolving heat and usually light.

Combustible Hydrocarbon: is any organic gas or vapor which, when mixed with air or oxygen, is capable of the propagation of flame away from the source of ignition when ignited.

Completion Plug: A plug (LOCK-O-RING® Plug or SHORTSTOPP® Completion Plug) installed under pressure in the throat of a fitting. It allows removal of valves and equipment following a hot tap and/or plugging operation.

Consumables: are those materials or components which are depleted or require periodic replacement through normal use of a gas detection instrument. They normally include: batteries, filters, connection tubing and test or calibration gases.

Current: an electric current consists of charged particles (electrons) moving through a conductor. When the current moves only in one direction, it is called a direct current. When the current fluctuates rapidly back and forth, it is called an alternating current.

Detection: this terms refers to the initial indication of a fuel gas leak. This can mean small concentrations of 10 to 500 PPM. This is the precursor step before isolation and/or localization of the gas leak.

Dilution Effect: refers to the effect on an atmosphere sample by lessening the concentration of fuel gas (PPM) in a given sample brought about by the volume of the aspiration manifold, water trap valves, oxidizer oven, and gas sensor.

Diode: a tube with two electrodes. The main use of diodes is to keep the electric current flowing in one direction.

DN: diamter nominal
